Amid Tibet’s desperate fight for religious and political freedom for Tibetan Buddhism and its citizens, and its call for the return of Tibet’s spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso to Tibet, the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism (Jogye Order Head Ven. Jaseung) expressed their condolence to lament the recent deaths of Tibetan monks and nuns. His statement was published here on November 15th.

Ven. Jungman, a spokesman of the Jogye Order said, "We publish this statement to convey the deep sadness felt by the Jogye Order and to convey compassion for the recent acts of self-immolation by Tibetan monks and nuns caused by their desperation for political independence and religious freedom."

"The Jogye Order prays for all those monks and nuns who have entered Nirvana, and for the complete recovery of monks and nuns who still lies on the boundary between life and death."

"As students from the same teacher Shakyamuni Buddha, the Jogye Order feels great sadness and sympathy towards the current situation in Tibet, and expressed condolence, well-wishes of complete recovery, and solidarity for Tibet as disciples of the Buddha".

The Jogye Order also commented that, "Tibetan monks and nuns should be guaranteed religious freedom and the human rights situation in Tibet needs to be improved as soon as possible." Howver, the order stressed that "religion and politics should remain a separate issue, and peace in Tibet should be ensured by means of dialogue and compromise.”

The following is the full statement from the Jogye order:

THE JOGYE ORDER’S STATEMENT ON THE RECENT ACTS OF SELF-IMMOLATION BY TIBETAN MONKS AND NUNS

The Jogye Order mourns all those passed away in the acts of self-immolation, and pray for peace in Tibet.

The Jogye order of Korean Budhism mourns all those passed away in the desperate acts of self-immolation during their fight for political independence and religious freedom. Since March this year, 11 Tibetan monks and nuns have chose to set themselves on fire as acts of religious austerity while calling for change in the current situation of Tibet. The Jogye Order prays for all those monks and nuns who have entered Nirvana, and for the complete recovery of monks and nuns who still lies on the boundary between life and death. As the students of the same teacher, Shakyamuni Buddha, the Jogye Order feels great sadness and sympathy towards the current situation in Tibet.

Tibetan monks and nuns should be guaranteed religious freedom and the human rights situation in Tibet needs to be improved as soon as possible. Religion and politics should remain a separate issue, and peace in Tibet should be ensured by means of dialogue and compromise. Through mutual effort, as based on the compassion of the Buddha, there should be no more means for acts of self-sacrifice  and the Jogye Order earnestly prays for peace in Tibet.
