Call to the WFB - Embrace the Digital Dharma or Fade into Irrelevance
Op-Ed, by Kooi F. Lim, Managing Editor, The Buddhist Channel, 13 December 2025
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia -- In an era defined by artificial intelligence, algorithmic discourse, and a global information war for hearts and minds (read social media), the Buddhist world stands at a precipice. We are losing the narrative.

While Christian and Muslim communities have built robust, modern media empires and digital outreach strategies, Buddhist voices remain fragmented, meek, and technologically antiquated. Our profound philosophy of peace, interdependence, and compassion is being drowned out by the cacophony of a digitized world we have failed to master.
The World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) was founded to unite and strengthen the global sangha. Today, that mission is not just about doctrinal harmony - it is an existential imperative to equip Buddhism with the tools for survival and influence in the 21st century. We implore the WFB to catalyze a radical transformation, pivoting from a ceremonial body to a dynamic engine of Buddhist Technological Development. The path forward is clear, and it is digital.
A) Reclaiming the Narrative: AI and Ethical Media Infrastructure
Without a dedicated, powerful media ecosystem, Buddhist perspectives on global crises - from climate collapse to social injustice - are relegated to footnotes. We cannot articulate a cohesive political or social vision if we do not control the means of dissemination. To remain steps behind is to accept marginalization (See: https://buddhistchannel.tv/index.php?id=70,13640,0,0,1,0).
We must immediately pursue a threefold media revolution:
1. Forge a Unified Buddhist Media Front. The WFB must actively engage and synergize existing pioneers like Buddhistchannel.tv and BuddhistDoor Global. The goal is a "Buddhist First" syndication network - a collective amplification of our voice, sharing resources and content to achieve global reach.
2. Develop an AI-Powered Ethical Framework. Imagine a media infrastructure rooted in the Dharma itself. We can build AI systems that operationalize Right Speech in real-time, scanning news for inflammatory language and suggesting harmonious alternatives. This "Mindful AI" framework would provide:
- Contextual Intelligence: Auto-generating cited background on complex issues, fighting the decontextualized reporting that fuels suffering (dukkha).
- Integrity Audits: Moving beyond simple fact-checking to a holistic "integrity score" based on sourcing, bias, and compassionate framing.
3. Launch a Flagship Application: "The Mindful Wire." In partnership with a global agency like Agence France-Presse (AFP), the WFB could sponsor a premium news service where all content is filtered through our ethical AI. Subscriber newsrooms worldwide would receive copy pre-vetted for wisdom and compassion, complete with reader wellness resources. This is not mere "tech for good"; it is infrastructure for well-being, offering the world an antidote to toxic discourse.
B) Deepening the Dharma: AI in Scriptural and Cultural Preservation
Our technological mission must also turn inward, to preserve and perfect our understanding of the Dharma itself.
1. Revolutionize Scriptural Analysis. We must fund AI projects that perform comparative, cross-linguistic analysis of suttas in Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, and Tibetan. Understanding the morphology and intrinsic value of key terms in their original languages is critical for translation fidelity and doctrinal clarity, preventing dilution or misinterpretation over digital generations (https://www.dharma-wangi.space/post/how-norbu-source-classical-buddhist-languages-translations-can-be-a-game-changer).
2. Lead in Academic Digitization. The WFB must formally collaborate with pioneering consortia like the Pacific Neighborhood Consortium (PNC - https://www.pnclink.org/about-pnc/mission), born from UC Berkeley, which is already leading in Buddhist AI projects and digital humanities. We must not reinvent the wheel but empower those already building it.
3. Digitize Buddhist Heritage & Tourism. From the circuits of India and Sri Lanka to lesser-known sites like Malaysia’s Bujang Valley, we must digitally map and render archaeology sites for education, pilgrimage, and tourism. Elevate forums like the International Buddhist Tourism Conference (IBTC https://buddhisttourism.org) to rival commercial travel bodies, making the Dharma accessible and economically sustainable.
4. Create a Living Buddhist Cultural Atlas. A digital mapping of the diverse cultures across the Buddhist world - their customs, rites, and foods - is urgent. This is not merely archival. It identifies vulnerable communities whose Buddhist-integrated way of life is threatened by aggressive evangelical movements. This database is a shield for cultural preservation.
The Way Forward: A New Sangha of Technocrats For this vision to materialize, the WFB’s structure must evolve.
1. Recognize and Integrate Proven Leaders. Buddhist groups that have already demonstrated world-class skills in media, AI, and digital heritage must be formally recognized and given leverage within the WFB. Their expertise is our strategic advantage.
2. Empower Buddhist Diaspora and Minority Communities. Buddhist communities in non-majority countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Russia often develop exceptional technical and strategic skills out of necessity. They are natural innovators and bridge-builders. They must be invited to lead select working committees, bringing vital, frontline perspectives.
3. Bring Technocrats to the Fore. The future of the Dharma will be written in code as much as in scripture. We need software engineers, data scientists, AI ethicists, and digital strategists sitting alongside venerable monastics at our highest tables. NORBU AI (https://norbu-ai.org) has proven that this model can work and does not require much investment (https://www.dharma-wangi.space/post/compassion-and-buddhist-ai). Their participation translates ancient wisdom into actionable, scalable solutions for modern suffering.
The choice before the World Fellowship of Buddhists is stark. We can continue as a well-meaning fellowship, watching our influence wane as the digital age accelerates without us. Or, we can boldly reconstitute ourselves as the central node in a global network of Buddhist Technological Development - funding, coordinating, and sanctifying the tools that will carry the Dharma into the future.
The Bodhisattva’s vow is to use all means available (upaya) to relieve suffering. In this age, upaya includes artificial intelligence, syndicated media, and digital mapping. Let us wield these tools with wisdom and courage, building not just a fellowship, but a future.
The time for a Digital Dharma is now. The WFB must lead, or it will be left behind.
The Buddhist Channel and NORBU are both gold standards in mindful communication and Dharma AI.
