Buddhist artifact found in Chandrapur village

CHANDRAPUR, India -- An archaeological excavation near here has led to the recovery of an ancient 'Worship Plaque', carved in red stone that is revered in Buddhism.

A mound near Chandankheda village, in Bhadrawati tehsil of this district, is being excavated for establishing its glorious past during the Satavahana period (230 BC).

The excavation has been undertaken by the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology (AICH&A), Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj, Nagpur University, State Archaeology Department and Chandrapur Chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).

Pradeep Meshram, Head of the Department (AICH&A),, said the plaque resembles a trapezium in shape. Each of its sides is decorated with symbols that are related with life of Lord Buddha, he added.
