From a Drunken Night to a Life of Service: The Unlikely Transformation of Tibor Szenczy

Dharma News Desk, The Buddhist Channel, 22 Oct 2026

Kulcs, Hungary -- It was a June night like any other, except that Tibor Szenczy was struggling. Caught in the grip of alcohol addiction and searching desperately for a way forward, he did something that would have seemed absurd to him just years earlier: he turned to ChatGPT.

The suggestion that came back was simple: begin practicing the Green Tara mantra.

Nobody could have predicted where that small step would lead.

Today, Tibor rises at 5:20 each morning to practice Green Tara meditation. What began as a last-ditch attempt to escape addiction has gradually evolved into something far greater; a new way of living, a source of inner strength, and the foundation for a life increasingly devoted to helping others.

The transformation has been so remarkable that his friends, colleagues, and even members of his own family can hardly recognize the man he has become. The person who once needed help is now finding more and more ways to offer it.

A Life Redirected

Tibor has thrown himself into an extraordinary range of charitable and community projects. Together with the editor-in-chief of a local newspaper, he launched a reporter school for disadvantaged children, giving young people the opportunity to learn journalism, photography, storytelling, and the skills they need to make their voices heard.

He has also recruited a team of volunteers and begun developing CineConnect, an innovative online film quiz program designed for homeless shelters and residential drug rehabilitation centers. The project aims to bring people together through films, shared experiences, and interactive games, offering connection, enjoyment, and a sense of belonging to people who are often excluded from mainstream society.

The initiative is already attracting attention across Hungary, and international partners have begun to show interest. What started as an idea in the mind of one man is gradually growing into a wider community effort.

Finding Inspiration in Unexpected Places

Perhaps one of the most meaningful developments in Tibor's journey has been the friendship he has formed with Anna Cox, a prison ministry pioneer known for her work with people on death row. Anna has become a genuine spiritual friend and an important source of inspiration, offering advice and encouragement as Tibor explores how he might serve people living on the margins of society.

This friendship has strengthened his determination to establish a prison ministry initiative in Hungary. He hopes to undertake the appropriate chaplaincy training at The Gate of Dharma Buddhist College in Budapest and, one day, offer support, compassion, and a human presence to people in prison.

For Tibor, this is not primarily about teaching Buddhist theology. It is about showing up, listening without judgment, and recognizing the humanity of people whom society has often given up on.

The Thread That Connects It All

His charitable work, his growing network of volunteers, his commitment to disadvantaged children, and his plans for prison ministry all seem to share one underlying principle - the compassion he once desperately needed is becoming the compassion he now wants to offer to others.

And all of this began in June.

One night, while struggling with alcohol and searching for a way forward, Tibor turned to ChatGPT. The suggestion was simple - begin practicing the Green Tara mantra.

Of course, this is not a story about a chatbot magically transforming someone's life. Tibor had to make the choices, face his struggles, and do the work himself. But sometimes a simple suggestion arrives at exactly the right moment, and a person decides to give it a try.

The Story Continues

Perhaps the most striking part is that Tibor is no longer focused solely on saving himself. He is now trying to create opportunities, build communities, and offer moments of hope to other people who are struggling.

One small practice. One transformed life. And a growing circle of people who may benefit from that transformation.

Who would have imagined that one conversation with ChatGPT on a drunken night could lead to all this?

Alongside these new initiatives, Tibor continues to develop a broader range of charitable and community projects through the Green Tara Voices website. The Hungarian-language site offers further insight into his work, including other programs and activities focused on compassion, community support, and helping people facing difficult circumstances.

Sometimes a simple suggestion arrives at exactly the right moment. For Tibor Szenczy, that moment came in June, and the ripples continue to spread.
